Engagement

Engagement can mean a lot of things. Our dog can be engaged at the grass, sky, another dog, engaged with a toy or a source we have in our hands. It can also be confusing hearing it during a conversation between trainer and dog owner. What does it mean for our dog. How to practice engagement.

Routine

Loose Leash Walk

Benefit : Bella will learn and always remember how to follow you.

Step 1: Reward her using food.

a) Say Bella with me and start walking. Say good and reward her behind your left leg.

b) while Bella is behind you say break and drop the food on the floor to let her engage with the environment.

c) Repeat step a) by adding more duration and before Bella start to sniff at the floor repeat b) by saying break.

Build the habit of separating your word from your action. Use the leash to stop her from passing your left leg while you are walking.

Step 2: Repeat step 1 as many time as possible until she can follow you without pulling.

Engagement

Benefit : Bella will pay attention and will listen the first time you call her when you practice this exercise. When she refuses to look at you or not listening the first time you say something, use this exercise to remind her.

This Skill breakdown go over the skill of timing :

  • When you say yes & reward her (separating verbal from physical cues).
  • How to get better with when to say nope or no.
  • When to use the leash when using the cues (nope, no, hey, & AnAn).

Focal Focus 1c

Place

Benefit : Recall Bella from anywhere. Control excitement, stop separation anxiety and build impulse control in every environment. Turn every table or chairs into a place.

Basic Level

Distance & Directions

Step 1: "Yes" terminal marker. Start with engagement. Say place & take 1 step towards the placement bed. Say yes as soon as she step on top of the bed. Do that repetition a few times (+5x) and each time take 1 step backwards to add distance between you and the placement bed. Set a goal to be able to send him to place while standing 20 step away from the placement bed.

Step 2:  "Good" duration. Stand 20 step away from the bed and ask her to go to place say good, & move towards her and reward her using food.

Intermediate Level

Recall & Position Changes

Go home

Benefit : Bella will always listen when you tell her to go home. You will be able to tell her to go home at a distance and use the crate for position changes.

Step 1: Reward her using food. Ask for engagement

a) Say Bella go home & yes as soon as she's in the crate. Take 1 step backwards after saying yes to add distance.

b) When you have the distance you want. Start to use duration. Repeat step a) while standing 10 step away from the crate and say good when she's in the crate.
