Engagement

Engagement can means a lot of things. Our dog can be engaged at the grass, sky, another dog, engaged with a toy or a source we have in our hands. It can also be confusing hearing it during a conversation between trainer and dog owner. What does it means for our dog. What does it means for us.

Focal Focus Exercises 1a

engagement - Pay attention

Benefit : Miri will pay attention and will listen the first time you say his name. When he refuses to look at you, use this exercise to remind him.

Step 1: Get Miri fully engaged. Say his name once, soon as he look at you say yes. Reward him and repeat the exercise. Repeat this exercise in different environment and add new distractions.

Focal Focus Exercises 1b

Basic Level

Distance & Directions

Step 1: "Yes" terminal marker. Get Miri engaged. Say place & take 1 step towards the placement bed. Say yes as soon as he put all 4 paws 🐾 on top of the bed. Do that repetition a few times (+5x) and each time take 1 step backwards to add distance between you and the placement bed. Set a goal to be able to send him to place while standing 20 step away from the placement bed.

Step 2:  "Good" duration. Stand 20 step away from the bed and ask him to go to place say good, & move towards him and reward him with food. Clarify you want him to remain on the bed by moving around.

Step 2: Recall...

Focal Focus Exercises 1d

Using the touch pad

Benefits: Long-Distance Communication with Miri or Simba. The ability to communicate with Miri or Simba over a distance provides immense benefits. It allows you to give them directions effectively and utilize physical cues to guide them to different locations, even amid distractions.

Focus Areas for Training

  1. Distance and Engagement with the Touch Pad : Start by teaching them to go to the touch pad from a distance. Once they are comfortable with that, shift your focus to engaging their interaction with you. This means you will move around the touch pad area while ensuring they pays attention and mirrors your movements.

Training Steps

Step 1: Revisit past exercises

Begin by repeating the exercise you previously did with the placement bed, now incorporating the touch pad.

Step 2: Initial Distance Commands

Stand about 10 steps away from the touch pad and instruct Miri or Simba to go to it. Use a positive tone, saying "Good!" as they approaches. Remember to gently guide them back to align with you before rewarding them.

Step 3: Movement and Alignment

Once Miri and Simba is comfortable with step 2, start moving around the touch pad area. Each time you move, guide them to align in front of you. Stand about 2 steps away from the touch pad, continue to navigate the space, and reward every time they moves with you. When you conclude the session, say "Break" to indicate that they can relax.

Directions Training with Multiple Touch Pads

Step 1: Setup Multiple Touch Pads

Arrange multiple touch pads on the floor to create a dynamic training environment where Miri and Simba can learn to respond to various directions.

Use these steps to develop their ability to follow your commands and enhance their engagement skills effectively!.

Source Focus 1d

Side Changes Heel & middle

Benefit: The benefit of practicing and revisiting this video is Miri will be able to come to your left all the times. When he forget how to come to heel. Repeat this game.

Step 1: Get Miri fully engaged. Ask him to come to heel while making minimal movement.

Step 2: Use source focus to fix him if he is not align with you properly.

Step 3: Ask him to come to heel without having food in your left hand.

Routine

Wait

Issues this will solve : Stop your dog from running out the door without your permission.

Step 1: Ask Miri to wait. Open the door, turn and face him & then step out the door. Ask him to engaged and use the word "Cross" so he can come out.

Routine

Auto-Sit

Benefit of doing this game: Your dog will stop behind your left leg and sit without you having to remind it to sit.

Step 1: Ask Miri to engaged. Say with me and take 1 step & stop. If he doesn't sit use food. Say with me take 1 step and Lure him into a sit by holding food on your left hand and positioning it right above his head. Do that 3 to 5 times. Remove food, say with me take 1 step & stop if he still doesn't sit use the leash to give him a feedback of "that's not what I want". Keep doing this exercise until he sit without you having to use the leash, food, or remind him.

Routine

Break & Loose Leash Walk

Goal: Miri will understand the difference of walking next to you vs when you give him a break and you want him to explore.

Step 1: Before we start walking we want to make sure his shoulder is behind or next to our left leg never in the front. Go over auto-sit with Miri.

Step 2: Once you know Miri & Simba will auto-sit without any challenges. Say "with me" walk at a slow paste before starting your normal walk to make sure they are with you.
