 Basic Exercise 

 Focal Focus Exercise 1a

Using crate 

Benefit : You will know how to send Simba home every time. You will know how to send Simba home, do several position changes or have him run back to you. How to send him home and wait for your next instructions. 

 

Step 1: Get Simba fully engaged. Say go home while standing next to the crate. Say Yes as soon as Simba step inside the crate. Every time you say yes add distance between you and the crate. Repeat this step until you have the distance you want. 

 

Step 2: Send Simba home and have him do several position changes. 

 

Step 3: Put a handful of food somewhere Simba can see. Get Simba engaged and ask him to go home. Ask for obedience while he is inside the crate. Say Yup for him to go get the reward when you are finish. 

 

 


Focal Focus Exercise 1a

Engagement

What to know: Word first then action to reward Simba.

 

Step 1: Bring Simba outside in an control environment, no distractions. Say his name and say yes when he look at you in the eyes. Use the marker system to add clarity in your communication  (Yes, Good, nope, NO).

 

 

 


Focal Focus Exercise 1b

Touch Pad

Benefit: being able to communicate with Simba at a long distance. To give him directions, and commands while he is far from you. Being able to add more clarity in using focal focus, source focus & side change (heel, right, & middle). 

 

What to have: A horse feeder bowl placed upside down. A long leash when you are practicing this exercise outside where there's distractions. Use Simba's favorite reward. (His food, treats, or toys).

 

Step 1: Get Simba comfortable going to the touch pad you want. First do several repetition of sending him to the touch pad, as soon as his feet touch it say "yes" for him to return to you. Once you have the distance you want, start by adding duration and keeping his engagement at that distance. 

 

Step 2: Move around the touchpad while you are at a distance. Use "nope & good" to communicate with Simba what you want. Keep his engagement while you are moving around the touch pad.

 

Step 3: Use source focus to move him. Move him to your front, heel, middle or right side.

 


Engagement Exercise 1c

Place

Benefit : Recall Simba from anywhere. Control excitement, stop separation anxiety and build impulse control in every environment. Turn every table or chairs into a place.

 

 

This Skill breakdown go over the skill of distance, cues & timing:

  • Managing his engagement and use it to send him to place.
  • Using good or yes at the right time to recall & communicate with him.
  • Using the cues at the right time to do long distance obedience.

 


Routine Exercise 1c

Loose Leash Walk

Step 1: Get Simba engage before you let him out. Ask him to engaged before you say your command.

 

Step 2: Review auto-sit by making sure when you stop he stops with you and no tension on the leash. 

 


Intermediate Exercise

Source Focus Exercise 2a

Luring

Benefit : Simba will be able to follow your hands with a source of food. Using the leash all the times to position Simba where you want will become a challenge when he refuses to move. In the long term Simba will understand how to come to a position by following your hands without food. 

 

What is Luring ? Luring is what we use to teach behaviors and show the Simba directions of where we want him to be.

 

Step 1: Say the word ready and show Simba the source. When he sniff it say yes and reward him. Show Simba the source of food and get him to take 2 step following your hands in a straight line say yes and reward. Show him the source and get her to take more than 3 step in a straight line.

 

Step 2: Repeat step 1 by doing several repetition until Simba can follow your hands without food for directions.


Source Focus Exercise 2b

Spin

Step 1: Say the word ready and show Simba the source. When he's following the source move your hands in the shape of a circle.


Source Focus Exercise 2c

Position Change - Sit, Down, & Stand

Step 1: Get Simba fully engage to the source. Use the marker system to add clarity in your communication  (Yes, Good, nope, NO). Lure him into the down, sit or stand position. Start saying the word down, sit, or stand then lure him.

 

Step 2: Start to Fade away all the luring. Use Focal Focus & the word down, sit, or stand. Use luring only if he looks confused when you ask for the behavior. 

 

Step 3: Use focal focus & the verbal cue. Start to ask for a chain of behavior. Ask him to down, sit or stand or ask for it all at the same times. 

 


Source Focus Exercise 2d

Side changes

Benefit: Understanding the technical part of how Simba learn how to come into heel or your right side will be very useful 5 or 10 years from now when he forget how to come to your right side.

 

Step 1: Say ready and lure Simba into your left, middle, & right side without using any other verbal cue.

 

Step 2: Say the word first before making the action to lure him. Say ready & then heel to lure Simba into your left side, say middle then lure him into the middle position, & right to lure him into your right side. 

 


Advance Exercises

Touch Pad Exercise 3a

One way mirror

Benefit: Ultimate Engagement, Simba will ignore all distractions and pay attention to you only. He will follow your movement as you move and remain focus.

 

Step 1: Step in front of the touch pad bowl. Ask Simba to touch and focus. Take one step to your right and reward him when he moves and remain focus as he move. Take one step to your left and reward him when he mirrors your movement to the left. Use nope to clarify you need him to keep his eye at you while you move.

 

Step 2: When you can take one step to your right & one step to your left and he remain engage. Start by taking 3 step to your right and reward him when he remain engage. Take 3 step to your left and reward him when he remain focus.

 

Step 3:  Repeat step one & 2 with distractions. 

 


Place Exercise 3b

Long distance obedience

Benefit: Have control over Simba's obedience when he is at a distance.

Long Distance recall - Zoomies in between

Benefit: Have control over his movement when he's at a distance. 

 


Homework
